A Message From Our Principal
Greetings! Thank you for visiting our website. Our hope is that this tool will provide you with excellent information and resources. My name is Mark Herman and I am honored to serve the students, parents, faculty and staff, as the Principal of Greencastle-Antrim Middle School (GAMS) since July, 2007. I have been working within the field of education as a teacher, coach, dean, assistant principal, college professor and principal since 1985. I am blessed with a tremendous faculty and staff who are committed to our District’s Mission, “to create and provide opportunities for all students to become lifelong learners and productive citizens.”
Our vision at GAMS is to provide an individualized educational program for all students that is sensitive to each student’s developmental needs. Our goal is to establish high expectations and purposefully engage students in effective instructional practices to bring about measurable individual growth and achievement. Our faculty is collectively studying and implementing the research proven “best practices” of effective instruction espoused by the Learning Focused Schools Model.
GAMS serves more than 700 students in grades 6 through 8 using a Team approach. In a Team design, a group of highly qualified teachers share a group of students who are then subdivided into smaller collections to receive instruction in various subject areas including: language arts, math, science, social studies, wellness and two classes each year in the arts and humanities, including: environmental education, music, art, family and consumer science and technology education.
GAMS provides many wonderful physical resources which include: a campus environmental center, an outside courtyard classroom, fully equipped cardio room including a climbing wall, weight room with both Universal and free weights, library containing a computer lab and Smartboard system, designated computer lab, planetarium, gymnasium, technology education classroom, two family consumer science classrooms, art lab, both an instrumental and vocal classroom, special educational and support classrooms, conference rooms and a Student Services suite. We are also thankful we currently provide 10 computers in every classroom as well as wireless, mobile laptop computers and more than 25% of our classrooms hosting Smartboard systems.
Programmatically, we offer an excellent curriculum aligned to the Pennsylvania State Standards. We offer academic support and enrichment to all students in language arts and math both during our school day as well as through “After School Support” available Mondays through Thursdays until 4 p.m. We offer a variety of vocal and instrumental groups, drama and a wealth of clubs, intramurals and interscholastic athletics and a school store. In addition we are excited to provide special programs including our Anchor Program, Make a Difference Day, Career Day, History Day, Cumberland Life Festival, Field Day, etc.
We are a family of learners in the midst of a wonderful community that is rich in history and tradition, lavished by community service and sacrifice, proud of its family values and commitment to character; and, dedicated to excellence for the sake of its children. We invite you to partner with us as we endeavor to keep “Children First” the motto by which we conduct our work.
